Kennesaw, Ga. has a history steeped in the Civil War. Located around 20 miles northwest of Georgia's capitol city Atlanta in Cobb County, Kennesaw is a large Atlanta suburb with a population of 30,000. Kennesaw, Ga. began during the rail boom of the 1800s. The area where Kennesaw now sits was officially incorporated a few years after being decimated during the Civil War. Originally called Big Shanty, thanks to the community of traders who were often found there, Kennesaw became one of many establishments to appear alongside the Western and Atlantic Railroads.
Kennesaw is home to Kennesaw State University, one of the largest public universities in the state. Students here are under the jurisdiction of the Cobb County School District.
Kennesaw Mountain, home of the Civil War Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, is located outside of the city and has more than a dozen miles of hiking trails. Other attractions also showcase the local area's place in the Civil War.
