Today, Sandy Springs is a demographically diverse community covering 38 square miles in northern Fulton County. It is the second largest city in the metro Atlanta area, the sixth largest city in Georgia and is comprised of leafy neighborhoods, with everything from multi-million dollar mansions to 1950s ranches on big lots. Sandy Springs began a 30-year campaign for incorporation when the City of Atlanta tried to annex it in the 1970s. The Committee for Sandy Springs formed in 1975 to incorporate Sandy Springs into its own city. The Committee introduced bills into the Georgia General Assembly calling for a referendum on incorporation. In 2005, the referendum was held, and on June 21, 2005, the residents of Sandy Springs voted 94 percent for incorporation.

“Sandy Springs started as an agricultural community and crossroads, became one of Atlanta's first suburbs and bedroom communities, and is now one of the most progressive cities in America in terms of how we run our city,” said City Councilman Chip Collins. “Neighborhood amenities include trees, thriving swim-tennis clubs, large lots, a sense of community and good schools. There are also 22 miles of Chattahoochee River shoreline in Sandy Springs. Our Overlook Park has some of the finest river views, anywhere.”

Sandy Springs has the largest concentration of major healthcare facilities in metro Atlanta with 40 percent of all hospital beds. Northside Hospital is famed for its record number of births and its focus on offering women the finest in comprehensive healthcare. Saint Joseph’s Hospital is one of the foremost cardiac-care centers in the country while Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is recognized for excellence in more than 30 pediatric specialties, including cancer, cardiac, neonatal, orthopedic and transplant care.
