Loring Heights was founded as a residential community for Atlantic Steel Company millworkers just before World War II. Today, it has a vibrant mix of young professionals, newlyweds, younger families and longtime residents; is just minutes from Midtown and downtown Atlanta; and is right off of Peachtree Street between Buckhead and Atlantic Station.

It’s social with lots of trees, larger yards, and diverse, often gabled homes ranging in price from the $200,000s to the $900,000s. The range is wide due to numerous teardowns and rebuilds over the past 10 years.

“The neighborhood has undergone a good deal of change in the past decade or two, so folks have been pretty eager to get involved and continue to improve it,” said resident Brian O’Neill. “In 2007 and 2008, we formed the Friends of Loring Heights Park, a non-profit designed to update and provide a better space for our neighborhood to gather. This has led to over $400,000 in improvements to our park area, which includes a pond. The recent work includes the construction of a brand-new playground, landscaping improvements, the construction of a deck and the donation of a bronze sculpture by one of our neighbors.”

A teardown of several duplexes has resulted in even more green space, with an open field and a bike path.

There are roughly 330 homes in the neighborhood, which is within walking distance of numerous restaurants and a mile from Piedmont Hospital. The community is served by E. Rivers Elementary (which is scheduled for a teardown and rebuild in late 2013), Sutton Middle and North Atlanta High School.

“Our neighborhood is particularly involved in E. Rivers, with both co-presidents in the PTA coming from Loring Heights, including my wife Laura, along with several other board members,” said O’Neill. “We are proud to send our kids there.”
