Saugerties is located in Ulster County and contains the village of Saugerties. “Nestled in the Hudson Valley, Saugerties borders the Hudson River to the east, and offers views of the Catskill Mountains to the west,” notes the town’s website. “Making up the Northeast corner of Ulster County, Saugerties offers a blend of history, sports activities, cultural events, arts and an historic business district.”

The town also is home to many historic locations including the Dubois-Kierstede Stone House, which was built in 1727 and is now the Kiersted House Museum; the Wynkoop House, which was built by descendants of Dutch settlers around 1740; Riverby, the estate of American naturalist John Burroughs (his study at Riverby is a National Historic Landmark); and Slabsides, a log cabin built by Burroughs in 1895.

The Saugerties lighthouse was constructed in 1835 to guide ships away from shallows and into Esopus Creek. Over the years it was rebuilt and enhanced. The Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy was established in 1985 to restore and maintain the lighthouse, and it was re-commissioned by the Coast Guard as a navigation aid. The foundation for the original lighthouse remains as a small island adjacent to the existing lighthouse.

Another notable landmark is The Orpheum Theater, built by J.C. Davis in 1890. It was a center for vaudeville acts, movies, roller-skating and basketball. According to the town’s website, “the Opera House, now the site of the M & T Bank, offered stage productions and classical performances. Public dances were held there and at the Seamon building, which is now the Furniture Mart. Vaudeville gave way to movies in the 1930's and the Orpheum Theater became the only movie house in town.”
