Amenia, New York

Amenia is a town on the east border of Dutchess County with a total of 43.6 square miles and less than two hours from New York City. The east town line is the border of Connecticut, and there are many communities that make up the charming town: the hamlet of Amenia, Amenia Union, Leedsville, Sharon Station, Smithfield, South Amenia, Wassaic and Wassaic Creek.

 

According to the town’s website, those many unique communities “enrich your time here.”  Amenia offers much to its residents, from baseball and cricket - farming and horticulture - fly fishing and enjoying the local aquaponically raised trout when dining out… The name of the town is derived from the Latin word, amoena, which means "pleasant to the eye" and you'll find that's true especially in our many vistas, views and parklands.”

 

Amenia also is home to many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Beth David Synagogue, the Indian Rock Schoolhouse, the Lewis Mumford House, the Hendrik Winegar House and the St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
