Kirkwood is a small community within the city of Atlanta, located around three minutes from downtown Decatur and entirely within DeKalb County. It's bordered by several neighborhoods - Oakhurst, Lake Claire, East Lake and Edgewood – and is active and close-knit, with an Annual Kirkwood Spring Fling and Tour of Homes. Last year’s festival marked its 10-year anniversary and featured live music, an artist market, a five-kilometer road race and food. Kirkwood also has a growing village center with restaurants, shops, a post office, bars and offices.
The community has approximately 3,000 residential properties. The majority are single-family homes and they range in size from 900 to over 6,500 square feet. A look inside a light-filled, upscale, two-bedroom bungalow reveals hardwood floors; fireplaces with brick surrounds in several rooms including the bedrooms; crown molding; built-in shelving; a sunroom; and a patio. There are also some lofts, condos, townhouses and live-work residences. Prices are generally from $300,000 to $650,000.
Kirkwood was its own city in the early 1900s and had its own mayor, schools, fire department and water system, according to www.historic-kirkwood.com. The former Kirkwood School, which was built in 1910, is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was converted into apartments in 1997.
Recreationally, residents enjoy parkland with tennis courts, basketball courts, a ball field, a playground and a recreation center; a state-of-the-art YMCA; proximity to the Charlie Yates Golf Course in East Lake; and access to a mixed-use urban trail, which is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists, according to www.historic-kirkwood.com.
Kirkwood is served by Fred A. Toomer Elementary, Coan Middle School and Maynard Jackson High School. The area's key medical centers include Emory Healthcare, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and DeKalb Medical Center.
