Millerton: A Free Spirit
The signature spirit of Millerton, New York, must be experienced to be understood. It has diverse blend of the eclectic, traditional, trendy and historic. According to the local tourism site There’s Something About Millerton the town is as unique as those that call it home.
Millerton is surrounded by mountains and water, just two hours north of Manhattan and half an hour from Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and Hudson, New York, on the border of Litchfield county, Connecticut.
Millerton’s history dates back to 1851, when according to the Village of Millerton website, a railroad was extended North. With the train coming to the Town of North East, government officials met and discussed founding a village, which was named after the civil engineer of the railroad, Sidney Miller. Over the next several decades, the vision of those government officials came to fruition, and the Village of Millerton became a thriving commercial center. Then, two more rail lines came to Millerton, connecting it with the Hudson River and Connecticut.
Today, residents enjoy the area’s many outdoor attractions, from farmer’s markets to the Rudd Pond State Park and the Harlem Valley River Trail. Heather Croner Real Estate Sotheby’s International Realty specializes in marketing and selling the signature properties of Millerton.
