Blue Ridge is a storybook town, famous for its mountain, river and lakefront views; displays of brilliant autumn foliage; historic downtown area; scenic railway; and annual traditions like the Christmas Express, during which children can ride the train with Santa Claus – even share their Christmas lists. The railroad is extremely popular with tourists almost year-round and generally takes passengers on a three-hour journey, from Main Street over to McCaysville, where passengers disembark, shop and have lunch before riding back to Blue Ridge. New this past year was Blue Ridge on Ice, which is an ice-skating rink located in Blue Ridge City Park.

For many residents, Blue Ridge is a vacation destination where they live part-time. In addition to all of its natural beauty – over 40 percent of Fannin County is forestland with fishing, hiking, biking and rafting - they love the fact that the town is often 10 degrees cooler than in Atlanta with a slower, relaxed pace. Many end up becoming permanent residents over time and some even open up businesses like restaurants, retail shops, and cabin-rental companies.

Fannin County dates back to 1854, borders parts of North Carolina and Tennessee and is 90 minutes north of Atlanta. The county seat, Blue Ridge, is filled with single-family homes that are mostly cabins and rustic in style. There are no townhouses, but there are a couple of small apartment houses and duplexes. Lakefront is the most expensive land, followed Toccoa River frontage and then mountain-view properties. Cabins with river, creek, or mountain views generally cost $200,000 to $500,000. A lakefront home on Lake Blue Ridge ranges from $500,000 to $2 million. There are a few gated communities but generally no swim/tennis neighborhoods.

Major hospitals serving the area include the Fannin Regional Hospital. The schools serving Blue Ridge are Blue Ridge Elementary School, East Fannin Elementary School, West Fannin Elementary School, Fannin County Middle School and Fannin County High School.
