Hudson Valley Living: Bucolic Beauty and Simple Elegance

“The land is the only thing in the world worth working for, worth fighting for, worth dying for, because it’s the only thing that lasts”….. Margaret Mitchell, Gone With The Wind.”

My love for the Hudson Valley was born when I relocated here in the 1970s. What struck me at the time was its bucolic beauty and simple elegance. Since that time I have watched first hand as it has changed from a farming community to a pastoral getaway. Yet through the decades, the unique beauty of the Hudson Valley remains ageless and just as compelling as ever.

I created this blog as a platform for sharing my knowledge and appreciation of this area, which my firm has proudly served for over 35 years. Each month my team and I will continue to share our insights and observations on a variety of topics related to house and home. By way of introduction, I wanted to provide a brief “tour” of our market through a few of our finest listings in Dutchess, Columbia and Ulster counties. Enjoy!

Grace and Beauty in Dutchess County

42 Altamont Rd, Millbrook
42 Altamont Rd, Millbrook

Grace Hill Farm is one of Milbrook’s finest properties and a true representation of the area. Set on five deeds and 150 secluded acres with six ponds, a stream and miles of trails for walking and riding, its lovely gardens surround the English-style main house. There also is a recently built, state-of-the-art equestrian facility that includes a 14-stall stable, an indoor arena and luxurious viewing room. The three-bedroom main house was once featured in Architectural Digest and is set on a hillside overlooking the property.

Peace and Quiet in Columbia County

70 Dogwood Drive, Hudson
70 Dogwood Drive, Hudson

The beautiful, contemporary property at 70 Dogwood Drive in Hudson is set on four acres and rests on a ridge on Mt. Merino. The 3,000 square foot home has a butterfly roof and was designed by award-winning architect Joel Sanders. The breathtaking views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains were made famous by the Hudson River School of painters a century ago. A wall of glass on the main floor offers priceless views as well. The design received an award of excellence from the American Institute of Architecture in 2010.

Art and History in Ulster County

33 Barclay Street Saugerties
33 Barclay Street Saugerties

Bright Bank truly is a rare and magical property, once owned by puppeteer John Henson, who was the son of Muppets creator, Jim Henson. Circa 1848, the 13,892 square foot mansion and farm buildings are set on 137 acres of Hudson Riverfront on the outskirts of the historic village of Saugerties. The partly restored mansion of brick construction is sited high on a bluff overlooking the river and many of the original architectural details are intact.

I look forward to sharing more of my love for this beautiful area with you!
